Gangtok Municipal Corporation inaugurates two RRR Centres

GANGTOK, May 23: As a run-up to World Environment Day, Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0, under the aegis of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, the Government of India has launched a nationwide campaign titled ‘ Meri Life, Mera Swachh Shehar’ Nationwide.
Under the said campaign all the cities are being encouraged to set up Reduce, Reuse and Recycle (RRR) centres where the citizens can give, and deposit used plastic items, old books, used clothes, footwear and others which will be further refurbished, reused and recycled.
The Gangtok Municipal Corporation (GMC) following the directive of the Government of India under the ‘ Meri Life, Mera Swachh Shehar’ campaign today inaugurated two RRR Centres.
The first centre inaugurated by GMC today was at Tathangchen Ward and the other at Arithang Ward which are also centres for two Municipal wards Arithang Ward no.9 and 10 respectively.
The inauguration of both the centres were done by the respective ward councillor of Tathangchen and Arithang Wards, Mrs.Pema Lamtha, Shri Passang Tamang and Shri Karma Tempo Rapgyal.
The inauguration of the centres had the presence of Commissioner GMC R.B. Bhandari along with the Joint Municipal Commissioner, Deputy Municipal Commissioner, Senior Bazaar Officer and other officials and staff of GMC.
Councillor Karma Tempo Rapgyal said that the campaign is really good as this way the people of the ward can donate their unused items at the centre and the needy can take it and Reuse it too and those which are non-reuseable can be later sent for Recycle.
He went on to appeal to the citizens residing under the GMC area to take advantage of the RRR centre by depositing, giving the unused items and helping the needy under reuse and the rest items collected and not reused can be recycled, and refurbished in a proper manner.
Earlier, the Commissioner GMC R.B. Bhandari briefed the citizens present at the RRR centre inauguration about the campaign in depth and also appealed to the safaikarmacharis to make everyone aware that the campaign.
He maintained that it is the best campaign under which we can help the needy and even collect unused items and dispose of them in a most befitting manner and extend some help in protecting our environment. GMC- commissioner during the briefing informed that the centres will be functional till 5th June 2023.
On the very day of the inauguration of the RRR Centres the citizens of the respective Municipal wards deposited, and gave away items like unused books, unused clothes, footwear and other items made of plastic which also included household unused items as well.
During the inaugural function, the councillors also administered the environment pledge.
